When I initially filmed this yoga class for healthcare professionals, it was at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. European countries were beginning lockdowns and the United States started to implement social distancing and eventual stay-at-home orders for much of the country.

During that time, I recognized – more than ever – that we needed to offer yoga for nurses, doctors, and all healthcare professionals to help them reduce stress.

For all of the stress of their daily jobs and the taxing nature that running around and being on your feet all day can result in, these heroes deserve some time for self-care.

How I Personally Reduce Stress

Before we jump into class, I wanted to share with you my own personal approach to deal with and reduce stress during times when it may be unavoidable.

When I find myself in this situation, I try to make a point to carve time out for myself. At the very least, I’m doing something that is in my control – allowing me to take back some of my power.

Although there may be all of this unavoidable stress swirling around that I need to figure out a way to coexist with, this tactic allows me a little slice of self-care.

I find that when I do this, I am able to take this time to ground myself so that I don’t react as strongly, or intensely, to the situation coming at me. This really allows me to respond with a bit more roundedness, a bit more peace, and a little less intensity.

With this approach, we accept that often a stressful situation doesn’t just magically go away. But, this allows us to identify which tools work best to give space for the situation at hand, experience it, and live in it with a more even temper so that we don’t burn out.
